Sacred Heart Students Go National on CBC Radio
CBC Radio reporter Catherine Cullen met with Grade 10 students Sasha, Tyler, Kashvi and Mya as part of a larger story about the idea of 'banning' social media for youth under 16 years of age. Tristan Nuyens was also interviewed, providing his perspective about social medias impact in the classroom. The show aired on Saturday, May 16.
The four students met with the reporter on Thursday morning for about an hour in the atrium where they answered questions:
What do you think of banning social media for kids under 16?
How much are you using AI chat bots...and do you think it's right to group that in with social media?

Over $29,000 Raised! Cake Auction A Massive Success.
A massive thanks to all students, staff, families, extended families who raised money for 15 charities in Sacred Heart's 26th annual Cake Auction. We've heard stories about extended family members, neighbours and others who helped create over 120 cakes to be auctioned to homerooms who raised money for the charities listed here.
What makes the Cake Auction especially powerful is its spirit of giving. Every dollar raised is donated directly to local and national charities, ensuring that the success of the event has a real and lasting impact in the wider community. Through this tradition, our students experience firsthand how creativity, collaboration, and compassion can come together to make a difference for others.
Each year, the Catholic community engages in a week-long celebration of the unique identity and distinctive contributions of Catholic education during Catholic Education Week. This year’s celebration is entitled, “Catholic Education: Pilgrims of Hope” will be celebrated during the week of May 4th to May 9th.
Catholic Education Week celebrates the ongoing gift of publicly-funded Catholic education. Publicly funded Catholic education has existed in Ontario since 1841 and its graduates have served Ontario and Canada very well. The current generation of students in our publicly funded Catholic schools will serve with the same spirit and generosity as their previous generations.
Multi-Cultural Night - Now an Annual Event
Sacred Heart’s Multi-Cultural Night was a vibrant and meaningful celebration in the school community. This first-time event grew into a tremendous success, bringing together hundreds of students, families, staff, and community members for an evening filled with dance, fashion, music, storytelling, and food from cultures around the world. Student associations and student leaders proudly shared traditions and experiences that reflected the rich diversity of our school community.
The evening was far more than a celebration — it was an opportunity to build understanding, foster belonging, and strengthen connections across cultures and experiences. Through shared performances, conversations, and traditions, students were able to celebrate both their unique identities and the values that unite us as a community rooted in dignity, inclusion, and respect for one another.

Pick-Up and Drop-off Close to the School
We would like to share a quick reminder regarding student drop-off and pick-up on Havenwood Road to ensure the safety of our students and remain good neighbors within our community.
To keep traffic flowing smoothly and respect our neighbors, please keep the following in mind:
Respect Private Property: Please stay on public sidewalks and roadways. Avoid using private driveways or lawns for turning around or waiting.
Use Public Roadways: For all drop-offs and pick-ups, please use the public roadway only.
Sidewalks and Safety: If students are walking to meet you, please remind them to use the sidewalks and avoid taking shortcuts across private property.
Curbside Boarding: When stopping, please park approximately two feet from the curb. This allows students to safely board or exit the vehicle directly onto the public roadway.
Yellow Bus Transportation
Ottawa Student Transportation (OSTA) is launching its annual opt-out process to enhance bus routing and transportation planning for the 2026-2027 school year. If your child(ren) will not require school bus transportation next school year, please complete the electronic opt-out form to inform OSTA that a seat is not needed. This will help optimize services and minimize disruptions. Requests for reinstated service can be made anytime through OSTA’s Transportation Issues Form, and is subject to availability and eligibility. The opt-out form is now available on OSTA’s website. The deadline to apply is June 1, 2026.

Parent Event: The Family Smartphone Guide
CSPA is hosting parent events on April 20 and 21. Margot Denomme, author of "The Family Smartphone Guide" will be presenting to parents about phone/online safety and navigating the digital world. She has already done some virtual presentations for our board - both for students and parents. She is scheduled to speak with students at a few schools while she is in Ottawa as well. Copies of the book were sent out to all schools last spring.
We all encounter phone difficulties on a daily basis with students, and often parents are unsure of what to do. Margot provides very practical and important pieces of information to help guide parents about this topic.
The poster is attached - you may have received it already but I thought I'd send it along as well. If you can share it with your school communities, that would be great. All are welcome! Registration is open and can be found on the CSPA EventBrite page: http://OttawaCSPA.eventbrite.com

Practicing Lockdowns as a School Community
Please be aware that, each year, all OCSB schools practice Safe Schools procedures, including practicing lockdown drills. An emergency situation may develop within the school that prevents the safe and immediate evacuation of students and staff. We may need, for example, to allow police to move through the building without students in the halls. In such times, schools may initiate either a ‘secure school’ or a ‘school lockdown’ protocol. We will review these expectations in the coming weeks with students and provide direction when practicing.

Final Assessments – Exams and RSTs
Grade 9 - 12 students’ examinations and Rich Summative Tasks (RSTs) WILL NOT be rescheduled for holiday or travel convenience, and all appointments should be scheduled so as not to conflict with exams and RSTs. If a medical problem arises, a Vice Principal must be contacted prior to the exam or RST.
Students and Parents/Guardians can refer to the OCSB website for the Grade 9 - 12 calendar.

It has been a vibrant month at the school as we celebrate the rich contributions and history of Black individuals through literature, art, and community action. Our students have been deeply engaged in learning that spans across all departments, from the gymnasium to the art studio.
Authors Explored: Our library collection has grown! We’ve added 70 new books by Black authors in both English and French for students in grades 7–12. Every homeroom was introduced to a specific work, sparking meaningful classroom discussions and written reflections on the themes presented by these authors.
Black History Trivia: Student Council is currently running a school-wide trivia contest, highlighting essential facts and figures from Black history.
Morning Inspiration: Our Chaplain is sharing daily insights into significant Black religious figures during morning announcements, accompanied by a global playlist curated by our Black Student Association (BSA).
Afro-Caribbean Dance: All Dance classes participated in an energetic workshop with MASC artist Juliane Laverty, exploring the history and movement of Afro-Caribbean dance.
National Gallery Visit: Student and staff members of the BSA, Arts, and Design classes had a private tour of the National Gallery of Canada focused on prominent Black visual artists.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a sacred season in the Christian calendar dedicated to prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Over these 40 days, we will teach students about the importance of fasting, prayer and almsgiving.
Also, as Ramadan begins, we extend our blessings to students who are observing. May this time of fasting and reflection bring peace, strength, and spiritual renewal to our students and families.
7/8 Parent-Teacher Interviews
Grade 7/8 Parent-Teacher Interviews are scheduled for (Thursday, February 19). We will provide parents with options for scheduling a 10-minute conference focusing on the recent report card. All interviews will be held in person at Sacred Heart.
Interviews are intended for students/parents seeking feedback to meet course expectations if there are present concerns.
Please note that it is not uncommon for our intermediate educators to teach 150 students. If your child is progressing at a level 1/2 (50%-70%), then we encourage you to book an interview with the appropriate teacher. If your child is at a level 3 or above (70%+), then an interview is not required unless the teacher specifically indicates so.
The Learning Skills levels and comments are determined through the collaboration of all of your child's teachers - not just by the homeroom teacher. Should there be multiple N's and S's, then we encourage you to book.
Special note for Arts teachers: please book to see your child's current Arts teacher to discuss progress. Should you have questions about the mark on the report card from the previous arts rotation, then please reach out to that teacher individually instead of booking a spot.
The booking system was shared via direct email and and is now. The booking system will close on (Wednesday, February 18).

SH Wellness Group - Small Group Sessions - Grades 7&8
One of our continued priorities is to promote and expose students to good mental health practices. In the near future, we will be running a small group session with our mental health worker, Ms. Davidson. If families identify a need to do so, we are asking parents/guardians to sign their child up for these groups to help us achieve this priority.
The session are meant to help students with stress management skills. There are 4-8 sessions and they will occur on Thursdays for approximately 1 hour. Click HERE to read more about the opportunity.
